Polygala japonica is a flowering plant species that belongs to the milkwort family, Polygalaceae. It is native to Northeast Asia, East Asia, Southeastern Asia, and eastern Australia. This plant is a wiry, decumbent dwarf shrub that grows between 10 and 25 centimetres (3.9 and 9.8 inches) in height. Its stems are covered in tiny curled hairs. Its leaves measure 5 to 20 millimetres (0.20 to 0.79 inches) long and 3 to 10 millimetres (0.12 to 0.39 inches) wide. The flowers of Polygala japonica range in color from purple to mauve, and are 5 to 6 millimetres (0.20 to 0.24 inches) long. It produces flowers between October and December.
