About Polycauliona candelaria (L.) Frödén, Arup & Søchting
Polycauliona candelaria (L.) Frödén, Arup & Søchting is a bark-dwelling (corticolous) lichen species belonging to the family Teloschistaceae. It was among the first lichens that Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus formally described, in his 1753 publication Species Plantarum. After its original description, this taxon accumulated a long, extensive list of synonyms. It was not transferred to the genus Polycauliona until 2013, when Ulf Arup and colleagues reclassified the family Teloschistaceae based on molecular phylogenetics. In North America, a common vernacular name for this species is shrubby sunburst lichen.
