Its known distribution covers the eastern United States, excluding Florida, as well as southern Ontario and Quebec. The wingspan of this species ranges from 23 to 30 millimeters. In Canada, crossline skippers produce one generation per year, emerging from late June to mid-August, while populations in the United States have two generations annually. Larvae of this species feed on grasses, specifically including redtop grass (Tridens flavus) and little bluestem (Andropogon scoparius). Adult crossline skippers feed on flower nectar.
