About Polites mystic (Edwards, 1863)

Polites mystic (Edwards, 1863), also known by the scientific name Limochores mystic and common names the long dash or long dash skipper, is a species of butterfly. This species is commonly found in northern North America, and in mountain regions of southern North America, where it occupies grassy habitats. Its preferred grassy areas include meadows, marshes, streamsides, wood edges, and prairie swales. On the upper side of its wings, the species has a dark brown base color with reddish to yellowish-orange markings. Female individuals have a broad black patch at the base of their forewing. Male individuals have a long, slightly curved stigma on the forewing, which may be connected to the dash located near the wing apex. On the underside of the hindwing, the species is orange brown, and marked with a curved band of equal-sized yellow spots.
