About Polistes goeldii Ducke, 1904

Description and identification: The body of Polistes goeldii is blue-black, with some sutures and articulations reddish, and individuals measure 18 to 20 millimeters in length. Its wings are black with black-brown venation. The nest of this species is distinct and similar to the nest of the Australian species Ropalidia revolutionalis; its comb is only two cells wide, and can grow to be very long. Distribution and habitat: This species has been recorded in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Peru, and Trinidad. The limited number of collected specimens and sightings suggests that while P. goeldii is widespread, it is a rare species.
