About Polia bombycina Hufnagel, 1766
Polia bombycina Hufnagel, 1766 has a wingspan of 43 to 52 mm. Its forewings are pale or dark lilac grey, more or less suffused with greyish brown, especially along the costal half. There is a slight dark basal streak below the median vein. The claviform stigma is outlined in black; the orbicular and reniform stigmas are large, paler than surrounding tissue, and have dark centers. The outer edge of the reniform stigma is white, and it is often followed by a rufous patch. The submarginal line is preceded by blackish wedge-shaped marks, and is acutely indented on the submedian fold. The hindwing is brownish fuscous. Several named variations exist: specimens where a glaucous tint dominates are classified as ab. nitens Haw. A much rarer, uniformly reddish brown form is unicolor Tutt. The form flavescens Spul., found in Bukowina, has pale brownish yellow forewings. Ab. mongolica Stgr., the common form in central and eastern Asia, is uniformly darker grey brown with a reddish undertone, and retains the equally distinctly indented submarginal line.
