About Polemonium californicum Eastw.
Polemonium californicum Eastw. is a species of flowering plant in the phlox family. It is commonly known by three names: moving polemonium, low Jacob's-ladder, and California Jacob's ladder. This plant is native to the northwestern United States, where it grows in shady, moist habitats including mountain woodlands. It is a hairy, glandular, rhizomatous perennial herb that grows in clumps, with several stems ranging from decumbent to erect and reaching a maximum height of 30 to 50 centimeters. Its leaves can grow up to 20 centimeters long, are compound, and consist of several pairs of leaflets that range from oval to lance-shaped. The leaflet located at the tip of the leaf is often fused to the pair of leaflets directly below it. Its inflorescence is a crowded cluster of bell-shaped flowers, each of which grows up to 1.5 centimeters wide. Each flower is blue or purple, with a yellow center and a whitish tubular throat. Its fruit is a capsule.
