About Pogonia ophioglossoides (L.) Ker Gawl.
Rose pogonia, scientifically named Pogonia ophioglossoides (L.) Ker Gawl., is a terrestrial orchid species. Its height usually ranges from 8 to 70 centimeters, and its specific traits vary based on the environmental conditions where it grows.
Rose pogonia forms colonies that grow in wet habitats with acidic soil, which often contains sphagnum moss. Common habitat types for this species include bogs, fens, marshes, and meadows. In northern regions, it most commonly grows in fens, and sometimes also occurs in bogs. Further south along the Gulf Coast, it grows in wet pine savannas and flatwoods. It is typically found growing near two other orchid species: Arethusa bulbosa and Calopogon tuberosus.
This orchid is pollinated by bumblebee species, including Bombus borealis and Bombus fervidus. Its flowers use deceptive pollination, and provide no nectar reward to visiting pollinators.
