About Poanes yehl (Skinner, 1893)
Poanes yehl, commonly known as the Yehl skipper, is a butterfly species that belongs to the family Hesperiidae. Its distribution ranges from southeastern Virginia westward to southwestern Missouri, and extends southward to eastern Texas, the Gulf Coast, and northern Florida. The wingspan of adult Yehl skippers measures 34 to 45 mm. On the upperside of its wings, the base color is bright orange, marked with wide dark borders. The underside of the hindwings differs between sexes: it is dark brown in females and orange in males. Individuals of both sexes have three to five pale median spots on their wings. Adult Yehl skippers feed on nectar from a variety of flowering plants, which includes sweet pepperbush, chinquapin, pickerelweed, and swamp milkweed. The larvae of this species are thought to feed on plant species from the genus Arundinaria.
