About Poa alpigena Lindm.
Poa alpigena Lindm. is a grass species that grows up to 75 centimeters (30 inches) tall, and produces firm leaf blades. Its panicle reaches up to 13 centimeters (5.1 inches) in height, with lax branches that are sometimes reflexed. Its crowded spikelets measure 3–7 millimeters (0.12–0.28 inches) long. The glumes of Poa alpigena are lance-ovate, and the second glume sometimes reaches the middle of the lemma positioned above it. The nerves on the glumes range from glabrous to scabrous, and the lemmas are covered in fine, minute pubescence. This species has a similar growth habit to Poa arida, but grows taller than Poa arida. The most distinct identifying characteristic of Poa alpigena is its curved underground stem. Poa alpigena flowers between June and August. This grass occurs in alpine meadows, wet slopes, bogs, and other similar wet habitats. Its range extends from Greenland and Labrador west to the Yukon, and south to Newfoundland, Michigan, Prince Edward Island, and the alpine areas of the White Mountains. It prefers loose, deep soil, particularly sandy alluvium.
