This lichen is common and widespread across Europe, where it typically grows on tree bark. It has also been documented growing in Algeria. A number of lichenicolous fungi have been recorded growing on Pleurosticta acetabulum: these are Abrothallus acetabuli, Lichenoconium erodens, and Stigmidium acetabuli.
