About Pleroma semidecandrum (Schrank & Mart. ex DC.) Triana
This species is a sprawling, evergreen shrub or small ornamental tree native to Brazil, growing between 3.0 and 4.6 m (10 to 15 ft) in height. Its dark green, velvety leaves are 100–150 mm (4–6 in) long, with several prominent longitudinal veins instead of the typical single central vein, and leaf edges are often red. Large royal purple blossoms open up to 130 mm (5 in) across, and are borne on terminal panicles that sit above the foliage, producing a spectacular display when the plant is in full bloom. While a few flowers open throughout the year, blooming is especially heavy from May to January. In cultivation, this plant can tolerate shade, but will not thrive in shaded conditions. Commonly called Princess-Flower, it is ideal for mixed shrubbery borders, or planting in small groups to amplify the visual impact of its bloom period. Nematodes can infect plants in this group, and overwatering can increase the risk of mushroom root rot. It can be pruned to any size, and will still produce a vivid flower display year-round.
