About Plectocephalus americanus (Nutt.) D.Don
This species is currently classified as Plectocephalus americanus (Nutt.) D.Don, and was previously known as Centaurea americana. It is commonly called American starthistle or American basketflower. It is an annual plant native to the southern central United States and northeastern Mexico. Its common name derives from the basket weave pattern found on the underside of its inflorescence and on its flowerbuds. It has pink petals that look somewhat like a thistle, with a cream-colored center. Its blooms are 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter and appear from May through June. The plant can grow to 5–6 ft (1.5–1.8 m) tall, and bears rough, lance-shaped leaves that are 4 inches (10 cm) long. It is often cultivated for its showy flowers, and can sometimes be found growing outside its native range as an escape from cultivation.
