About Platycnemis acutipennis Selys, 1841

Platycnemis acutipennis Selys, 1841 is a European damselfly species, the only one in Europe that has both an orange-red abdomen and blue eyes. Males of this species have moderately wide hind tibias; these are wider in the related species Platycnemis pennipes and Platycnemis latipes, which also both have males with blue abdomens. The thorax of Platycnemis acutipennis is buff-coloured with black stripes, and each wing has an orange spot near its tip. Males and females of this species are similar in appearance. Platycnemis acutipennis is common and widely distributed across southwestern Europe, where it is endemic. Its endemic range includes Portugal, Spain, and France, though there are recent recorded sightings of the species from Germany.
