About Platanthera cristata (Michx.) Lindl.

Platanthera cristata (Michx.) Lindl. is commonly called the crested yellow orchid or crested orange bog orchid. It is an orchid species, a flowering plant belonging to the family Orchidaceae, and it is native to North America. This species was first formally described in 1835 by English botanist John Lindley. It grows 2–4 leaves along its stem, and produces a dense inflorescence made up of multiple showy, bright orange flowers. Its labellum is often highly fringed, and a spur with a triangular or key-hole shaped opening protrudes from the back of the flower. It grows in moist meadows, marshes, prairies, sphagnum bogs, and wooded flats. Its native range covers the southeastern United States, extending from Texas to Florida and north along the east coast to New Hampshire.
