About Platanthera cooperi (S.Watson) R.M.Bateman
Platanthera cooperi is an orchid that grows erect, reaching a maximum height of approximately 90 centimeters (35 inches) from a bulbous caudex. Its basal leaves grow up to 20 centimeters long and 3 centimeters wide, while leaves positioned higher on the stem are much smaller in size. The upper section of the stem holds a spikelike inflorescence made up of many small green flowers that give off a honey scent during the evening. This species blooms from March through June. This orchid is endemic to chaparral, coastal sage scrub, and oak woodland habitats. It is native to southern California and the border region of Baja California. It can be found in the Santa Monica Mountains, Simi Hills, and San Gabriel Mountains of the Transverse Ranges; Santa Catalina Island and San Clemente Island of the Channel Islands; and the Santa Ana Mountains and Cuyamaca Mountains of the Peninsular Ranges.
