It is native to the Great Plains and Southwest of the United States. This species is an annual herb that grows from a taproot. Its leaves are lance-shaped, gray-green, and lightly hairy; they may grow up to 35 cm (14 inches) long, though most are smaller. The inflorescence is a narrow spike that reaches up to 20 cm (7.9 inches) long. Each small flower produces two red or reddish black seeds. This species is planted to provide forage and to revegetate wildlife habitat and rangeland. Its seed serves as food for many types of game birds, and its foliage is eaten by several types of animals including deer.
