About Plantago media L.

Plantago media L. grows in damp grassy meadows up to an altitude of 2,000 m (6,600 ft). A slender stalk that measures between 5 and 50 cm (2 and 20 in) grows from a basal rosette of finely-haired leaves. Its delicate pink-white flowers bloom between May and September. This species is hermaphrodite, and is pollinated by wind or insects, most particularly bees. Plantago media is native to Eurasia. It is native to eastern England, but is scarce in Scotland and Ireland. It is a calcicole, meaning it is characteristic of soils formed on chalk or limestone. It grows in grassland, meadows, lawns and waste places. This plant is edible. Archeological finds confirm it was used during the Roman era in Britain.
