About Pisolithus arhizus (Scop.) Rauschert

The fruiting body of Pisolithus arhizus measures 5–30 centimetres (2–12 in) in height and 4–20 cm (1+1⁄2–8 in) in width, and has a thin yellow-brown to brown exterior layer. Its spores are brown. The species Dictyocephalos attenuatus is similar to Pisolithus arhizus. The black viscous gel from this puffball is used as a natural dye for clothing. Pisolithus arhizus is a main component of mycorrhizal fungus mixtures sold for gardening, where these mixtures act as powerful root stimulators. This species is inedible.
