Nomenclature and Taxonomy
Pinus lumholtzii, commonly called Lumholtz's pine, or pino triste which means 'sad pine' in Spanish, is a conifer species belonging to the Pinaceae family. It is endemic to northwestern Mexico, and is named for Norwegian explorer Carl Sofus Lumholtz.
Geographic Distribution
This pine grows exclusively in the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Durango, Zacatecas, Nayarit, Jalisco, and Aguascalientes, located between 29° and 22° North latitude. It can be found at elevations ranging from 1,600 to 3,000 metres (5,200 to 9,800 ft).
Climate Requirements
It grows in warm temperate and cool climates that receive summer rainfall.
Mature Size
Mature Pinus lumholtzii reach a height of 15–20 metres (49–66 ft).
Conservation Status
It is classified as an endangered plant species on the IUCN Red List for Mexican plants.
