About Pinguicula lutea Walter
Pinguicula lutea Walter, commonly known as the yellow butterwort, is a warm-temperate carnivorous plant species belonging to the family Lentibulariaceae. Its flowers are usually bright yellow or straw-yellow, and very rarely white. Like all insectivorous plants in the genus Pinguicula, P. lutea traps small insects using specialized glands on the surface of its basal rosette leaves. This species grows in savannas and sandy bog areas of the Southeastern United States, specifically along the Gulf Coastal Plain of southeast USA. It is commonly found in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, and southeast Louisiana. Compared to other southern Pinguicula species, P. lutea thrives in a drier environment. It prefers to grow on nutrient-poor soil in acidic bogs with a pH range of 5.0 to 6.0, where the soil is a half-and-half mixture of peat moss and sand. Partial shade locations such as open pine woods, marshes, moist savannas, and sandy soils are favorable for its growth.
