About Pilosella piloselloides (Vill.) Soják
Pilosella piloselloides (Vill.) Soják, previously known as Hieracium piloselloides, is a species of flowering plant in the Asteraceae family, commonly called tall hawkweed. It is native to Europe, and has been introduced to North America where it is a common weed. This perennial herb grows erect stems that can reach over one meter in height, sprouting from a rhizome and connected root network. Its leaves vary in size and shape. The plant's inflorescence consists of flower heads that hold yellow flowers. In the eastern provinces of Canada and the eastern United States, this species grows in a wide range of habitat types, including disturbed fields, abandoned pastures, human-constructed marshes and riverbanks, lakeshores, dunes, beaches, grasslands, shrublands, savannas, and alvar, as well as many types of forest. In the states of Victoria and New South Wales (NSW), Australia, all hawkweed species are declared State Prohibited Weeds and are controlled under the Biosecurity Act 2015. Several eradication programs, which often use volunteer workers, currently operate to locate, stop the spread of, and eradicate any Pilosella (formerly classified as Hieracium) species plants.
