This species is found in North America, and has been specifically recorded in Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Ontario, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin. It is also found in Cuba. The wingspan of Phytometra ernestinana is approximately 18 mm. In Florida, adult moths of this species have been recorded in flight throughout the entire year.
