About Physcaeneura panda (Boisduval, 1847)

Physcaeneura panda, commonly known as the dark-webbed ringlet, is a butterfly species belonging to the family Nymphalidae. It is found in South Africa, where it is common and widespread across hot dry savanna habitats in KwaZulu-Natal, Eswatini, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, Limpopo, and North West. Males of this species have a wingspan ranging from 34 to 38 mm, while females have a slightly larger wingspan of 35 to 39 mm. Adult butterflies are in flight from September to May, with the highest population peak occurring in late summer. It is thought that the larvae most likely feed on species from the grass family Poaceae. They have successfully been reared in captivity on two grass species: Ehrharta erecta and Pennisetum clandestinum.
