About Physalis walteri Nutt.
Physalis walteri Nutt., commonly called Walter's groundcherry or dune groundcherry, is a species of flowering plant. It is native to Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Virginia in the United States, as well as Northeast Mexico. Its natural habitats are pinelands and open coastal areas. This plant is a perennial herb that grows to roughly 2 feet in height. It produces yellow flowers that bloom between May and September. It grows from deep, stout roots, and its stems are a mix of erect and spreading along the ground. Stems are densely covered in very small hairs. Its leaves measure 3 to 13 cm long and 1.5 to 5 cm wide. The species is named for Thomas Walter, a British-born botanist who moved to Charleston, South Carolina in the 18th century.
