Mature Phymateus viridipes Stål, 1873 individuals reach about 70 millimetres (2.8 in) in length, and are capable of long migratory flights. Their body and forewings are green, while their hindwings are bright red and blue, creating a striking appearance when in flight. The pronotum — the dorsal area located immediately behind the head — is covered in spines or carbuncles, which are often tipped with red.
