Phyllanthus amarus Schumach. & Thonn. is a small annual plant that reaches a height of 30–60 cm. It has thin spreading branches, with each branch bearing two rows of small, alternately arranged elliptic-oblong leaves that are 5 to 10 mm long. Its flowers are radial, star-shaped, and approximately 2 mm in size. This species grows best in high-moisture soil under light shade, and reaches maturity in 2–3 months after growth. It has been used as a component of traditional medicine across multiple cultures, including Amazonian tribes, Ayurveda, and Sinhala folk medicine.
