This species was first described by Johan Christian Fabricius in 1793, and it was originally classified under the genus Lamia. It has a broad distribution across the entire African continent. Its recorded host food plants include Pyrus communis, Ficus carica, Salix babylonica, Cupressus sempervirens, and Vitis vinifera.
