About Pholisora catullus (Fabricius, 1793)
Pholisora catullus, commonly known as the common sootywing or roadside rambler, is a butterfly species belonging to the family Hesperiidae. Its core range extends from central regions of the United States south to central Mexico. Stray individuals can colonize areas as far north as southern British Columbia, northern Michigan, southern Quebec, and southern Maine. This species is not present on peninsular Florida. The wingspan of Pholisora catullus ranges from 25 to 33 mm. There are two generations per year. In the northern portion of its range, adult butterflies are in flight from May to August, while in Texas, adults can be seen on wing from March to November. The larvae feed on Chenopodium album, as well as species from the Amaranthus and Celosia genera. Adult common sootywings feed on flower nectar from a variety of flowers, including dogbane, marjoram, oxalis, white clover, common milkweed, peppermint, cucumber, and melon.
