About Pholiota limonella (Peck) Sacc.
Pholiota limonella (Peck) Sacc. is a mushroom species belonging to the genus Pholiota. This species commonly grows on fallen beech trunks and other types of hardwood. It shares all the same macroscopic characteristics with Pholiota adiposa and Pholiota aurivella, and can only be reliably distinguished from these two species by spore size. Currently recognized subspecies of Pholiota limonella include P. abietis, P. connata, and P. subvelutipes. Pholiota limonella is classified as not edible, though a 2010 source by Phillips notes that it has a mild taste. Despite this classification, a cultivation project in Hubei, China has worked to domesticate this mushroom for large-scale production as food.
