About Pholiota brunnescens A.H.Sm. & Hesler
Description: The cap of Pholiota brunnescens is either convex or flat, reaching 2โ7 centimeters in diameter. The cap is brown, and often turns orange as the mushroom ages. Its surface is slimy. The stipe measures 2โ7 centimeters long and 0.5โ1 millimeter thick. It is initially pale yellowish, and darkens as the mushroom matures. Bruising the stipe turns it brown, and an annulus is sometimes present on the stipe. The gills are either adnate or sinuate, starting pale and turning brown as they mature. This species produces a brown spore print. Habitat and ecology: Pholiota brunnescens grows in burned areas. It is commonly found in firepits, burn piles, and areas that have recently experienced forest fires. It can grow from burnt soil or burnt wood.
