About Phlox subulata L.

Phlox subulata L. is an evergreen perennial plant. It grows no taller than around 13 cm (5 in), spreads to cover an area 50 cm (20 in) wide, and forms low mats or cushions of hairy, linear leaves. It produces small five-petaled flowers that can be rose, mauve, blue, white, or pink, which bloom from late spring to early summer. In the wild, it naturally grows in habitats including rocky ledges, slopes, and clearings. In cultivation, it is grown as a groundcover or planted at the front of garden borders. It requires full sun and well-drained soil, and grows best in sandy or gravely soil. It is very hardy, tolerating temperatures as low as −20 °C (−4 °F), and is well suited to USDA hardiness zones 3 to 9.
