About Phlegmariurus dentatus (Herter) Arana

Phlegmariurus dentatus (Herter) Arana is a stout, upright lycophyte that grows up to 41 cm (16 inches) tall. Its leaves are linear-lanceolate in shape, and measure roughly 9 mm (0.35 inches) by 1.2 mm (0.047 inches), with toothed margins. Stomata only occur on the underside of its leaves. This species branches dichotomously and does not produce gemmae. This plant is widespread across the Azores, where it can be found on the islands of São Miguel, Terceira, São Jorge, Pico, Faial, Flores, and Corvo. It is less common in Madeira, and occurs only on Madeira Island itself. It grows on damp, sheltered slopes, in gullies, on banks above levadas, and at the edges of roads and forests, at elevations ranging from 200 to 2,300 m (660 to 7,550 ft) above sea level.
