About Phlegmacium triumphans (Fr.) A.Blytt
This species, Phlegmacium triumphans (Fr.) A.Blytt, has a yellowish cap with a diameter of 5โ12 cm (2โ5 in); the cap is darker at the centre and paler at the edges. Its stipe measures 7โ17 cm (3โ7 in) tall and 1โ2.5 cm (0.4โ1 in) thick, and is swollen at the base. The stipe is white in its upper section and yellow in its lower section, and bears tan or brown remnants of the veil. The gills are adnate, and are hidden by a cream or white veil when the fungus is young. When young, the gills are cream or lilac in colour; they darken as spores develop, and the species produces a rusty-coloured spore print. Its almond-shaped spores measure 10โ12.5 ร 5.5โ7 ฮผm. The flesh is cream-coloured, and has a mild taste. Phlegmacium triumphans grows under birch trees in autumn, and is widespread but local across Europe and Asia. It has also been reported from northeastern North America. It forms a mycorrhizal relationship with birch trees (Betula).
