The cap of Phlegmacium subolivascens ranges in color from purplish to grayish when young, and typically becomes more brownish as the mushroom matures. The cap is initially convex, and sometimes becomes flat with age. The stipe measures roughly 4.5 to 7 centimeters long and 0.8 to 1 centimeter wide, and its color can be cream, olive, or grayish. A cortina is present on this species. The gills vary in color from pale brown to buff, and the spore print is rusty brown. Phlegmacium subolivascens is most often found in forests located in the drier regions of the Pacific Northwest, growing underneath conifer trees.
