This species, Philorhizus sigma (P.Rossi, 1790), measures between 3.4 and 4.4 millimetres (0.13–0.17 inches) in length. It has a black head and straw-coloured, elongate elytra, which bear a dark-coloured transverse band. Its pronotum is bright red, and this species lacks wings. It occurs in marsh and fen habitats. In the United Kingdom, Philorhizus sigma is classified as a Vulnerable species.
