About Philereme vetulata (Denis & Schiffermüller), 1775
Philereme vetulata, commonly called the brown scallop, is a moth species belonging to the family Geometridae. This species can be found across most of the Palearctic realm. Its wingspan measures 24 to 30 mm. The moth has a shiny grey-brown coloration, and numerous slightly darker wavy lines cross both of its wings; these lines are angled near the subcosta on the forewings. Both the upper and lower surfaces of both wings bear a blackish discal dot. Philereme vetulata generally shows very little variation across individuals. The species produces one generation per year, with adult moths active in flight from the end of May through August. The larvae of Philereme vetulata feed on alder buckthorn, Rhamnus frangula. Larvae are dark grey, marked with paler stripes and orange suffusion, and can be found from the end of April to June. This moth species overwinters in the egg stage.
