About Phidippus otiosus (Hentz, 1846)
Phidippus otiosus is a species of jumping spider found in southeastern North America. It is primarily a tree-dwelling species. Females reach a body length of around 16 mm, and its iridescent chelicerae range in color from purple to green. This species naturally occurs in the southeastern United States, ranging from Florida and Texas to North Carolina. However, it is sometimes exported alongside plants such as Tillandsia, and has been found as far away as Sweden and Germany. Females place their single egg sac under the bark of oak and pine trees. Egg laying occurs from December to February in South Carolina, and from January to June in Florida. An egg sac can hold between 19 and 150 eggs. Spiderlings disperse between January and February, and mature during the fall.
