About Phellinus robiniae (Murrill) A.Ames

Fulvifomes robiniae, commonly known as the cracked cap polypore, is a fungus belonging to the family Hymenochaetaceae. This fungus primarily infects black locust trees, a process that is aided by bark openings created by infestations of Megacyllene robiniae. It can also grow on a range of other trees including Carya, oak, and Acacia. The cracked cap polypore is sympatric with most of its host trees. It produces a brown spore print, and leaves brown streaks on the tree bark below the fruiting body. This species was formerly classified as part of the genus Phellinus, under the name Phellinus robiniae (Murrill) A.Ames. It was later moved to the genus Fulvifomes when that genus was resurrected, a reclassification based on morphological and molecular phylogenetic evidence.
