Phalaris californica Hook. & Arn. is a perennial grass that reaches a maximum height between 0.5 meters and 1.5 meters. Its inflorescence can grow up to 5 centimeters long and 3 centimeters wide, with a roughly oval shape that is pointed at the tip and truncated at the base. The spikelets are covered in hairs, and they shift to shades of magenta to bright pink as they ripen. This species is native to the coastal hills and mountains of southern Oregon, and the northern and central regions of California. It grows mainly in moist locations such as meadows.
