About Phalaris angusta Nees ex Trin.
Phalaris angusta Nees ex Trin. is an annual grass that can grow up to 2.5 meters in height. Its inflorescence is a narrow, cylindrical spike made up of rough-haired, pointed spikelets. Like many other species in the Phalaris genus, this grass is toxic to livestock. When calves consume the grass, they develop neurological symptoms including tremors and convulsions, and large blue-green lesions are visible in their brain tissue during gross examination. Some cattle and sheep die suddenly after grazing in pastures containing this grass, while others survive longer but show persistent signs of neurological damage.
