About Pertya scandens (Thunb.) Sch.Bip.
Pertya scandens (Thunb.) Sch.Bip. is a small deciduous shrub in the Asteraceae family. It grows in sunny mountain forests from Kantō to Kyūshū in Japan. Its stalks are narrow but firm, and it has broad, oval-shaped leaves. Its flower head blooms in autumn of the plant’s first year, and typically holds around 10 cylindrical white structures approximately 1.5 cm long. In Japan, this species is often harvested from Mount Kōya and bundled to use as material for making brooms. Because of this use, its Japanese name is "Kōyabōki" (高野箒, Kōya Broom).
