About Periploca laevigata Aiton

Periploca laevigata Aiton is a shrub that can grow up to 2 metres tall. Its leaves are lanceolate. Stems grow up to 15 cm long, and are around 1 cm thick. The petals are oblong at their ends, which are yellowish-green, while the inner portion of the petal is brown. Its seed pods are long with pointed ends. The chromosome number of this species is 2n = 22. This plant is native to the Canary Islands, the Savage Islands, and Cape Verde, with its northernmost distribution reaching the Aegadian Islands of Sicily. In Cape Verde, it occurs on the islands of Brava, Fogo, Santa Luzia, Santiago, Santo Antão, and São Nicolau. Some authors classify the Cape Verdean subspecies as a separate species, Periploca chevalieri Browicz.
