About Pennellianthus frutescens (Lamb.) Crosswh.
Pennellianthus is a monotypic genus of flowering plants in the family Plantaginaceae. It contains only one known species, Pennellianthus frutescens (Lamb.) Crosswh. The genus belongs to Tribe Cheloneae, and was separated from the related genus Penstemon. Its native range covers the Russian Far East, specifically the regions of Kamchatka, Khabarovsk, the Kuril Islands, Magadan and Sakhalin, as well as Japan. The original genus name Pennellia honors Francis W. Pennell (1886–1952), an American botanist most well known for his research on the plant family Scrophulariaceae. The Latin specific epithet frutescens means shrubby, and refers to this plant's growth habit. Both the genus and the species were first described and published in 1970 in the Amer. Midl. Naturalist, volume 83, on page 362.
