About Pelecyphora emskoetteriana (Quehl) D.Aquino & Dan.Sanchez
Pelecyphora emskoetteriana typically grows by sprouting and forms clusters that can reach up to 10 centimeters in height. Its individual shoots are spherical to short cylindrical, growing 5 to 12 centimeters tall and 2 to 2.5 centimeters in diameter. Warts at the base of the shoots are 6 to 10 millimeters long and are often not persistent. This cactus has five to eight straight, yellow central spines with darker tips; the spines reach up to 1.2 centimeters in length and often resemble the species' marginal spines. It has 20 to 30 white, straight, irregularly arranged marginal spines that grow up to 1 centimeter long. The flowers range in color from dirty white to lavender to light purple, and measure 2 to 2.5 centimeters in both length and diameter. The fruits are red, spherical to ellipsoidal, and have a diameter of 6 to 9 millimeters. Pelecyphora emskoetteriana is naturally distributed in western Texas, United States, on the Rio Grande plains, and in the Mexican states of Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas.
