Pelazoneuron kunthii (Desv.) A.R.Sm. & S.E.Fawc. has scientific synonyms Christella normalis and Thelypteris kunthii. It is commonly called Kunth's maiden fern or southern shield fern. This species is the most widespread common maiden fern found in the southeastern United States, south of the fall line. Its distribution extends westward to eastern Texas. It most often grows in moist to dry terrestrial habitats, though it can also grow epipetrically (on rock surfaces). In areas located north of its native range, it frequently occurs as an escaped plant in greenhouses.
