About Pediana regina (L.Koch, 1875)

Pediana regina is a relatively large huntsman spider. Adult females have a legspan of 25 mm (0.98 in), while adult males have a legspan of 19 mm (0.75 in). The species is covered in filiform hairs or trichobothria, and individuals are typically dull tan or brownish grey, with deeper brown or tawny markings that band or freckle the legs and sporadically mark the rest of the body. A dark stripe, sometimes called a cardiac mark in spiders, runs lengthwise down the spider's dorsum, stopping at the slope below the forehead and eyes. The abdomen is bulbous and oval-shaped, and the cephalothorax is broad, tapering gently toward the front of the face and chelicerae. Unlike many other huntsman species, its legs do not curve extremely forward, and its two foremost legs are slightly longer than the other legs. This is a shared characteristic feature of the Deleninae subfamily that the species belongs to, as well as the closely related Heteropodinae subfamily. Pediana regina can be easily distinguished from other common huntsman genera, chiefly Isopedella and Holconia, by consistent morphological differences. Males of the genus Pediana lack sclerotised conductor bases, a delenine tegular apophysis, and a tegular flange, while females of Pediana lack an epigynal sclerite, though they still have a functional epigyne. These morphological traits also separate Pediana from the genus Isopeda. However, the genus Beregama, which was split from Isopeda, shares the same morphological traits that define Pediana. Pediana regina is the only member of its subfamily that has a procurved posterior eye row.
