About Pectis prostrata Cav.

Pectis prostrata, commonly called spreading cinchweed, is an annual plant in the genus Pectis that blooms during the summer. The construction and development of roads and highways have produced ideal growing habitats for Pectis prostrata. The geographic range of this species is expanding along the coasts of Florida, and it was recently discovered growing in Louisiana. It is expected to continue spreading along the Gulf Coast, as well as northward along the Atlantic Coast. Autogamy (self-fertilization) has helped Pectis prostrata spread rapidly as new suitable habitats have become available.
