About Patagioenas araucana (R.Lesson & Garnot, 1827)

The Chilean pigeon (Patagioenas araucana) measures 35 to 37 cm (14 to 15 in) in length and weighs 220 to 340 g (7.8 to 12.0 oz). Adult males are mostly reddish purple overall, with an iridescent green nape that has a narrow white line across its top. Their lower back, rump, and tail are gray, and the tail has a broad black band across its middle. The wings range from gray to black. Their orange eyes are surrounded by a narrow pink or yellow ring and bare purple skin. Adult females are duller and browner than adult males, and juvenile Chilean pigeons are overall shades of gray. This species is found in Chile from the Coquimbo Region south to the Aysén Region, and in the area of Argentina that immediately borders the southern half of its Chilean range. Across most of its range, it inhabits southern temperate forests, and shows a particular affinity for forests dominated by Araucaria and Nothofagus. In the northern part of its range, it occurs in dryer forest, and it is also known to forage in open habitats located near forests.
