About Paroaria dominicana (Linnaeus, 1758)

The red-cowled cardinal, with the scientific name Paroaria dominicana (Linnaeus, 1758), is a bird species that belongs to the tanager family Thraupidae. It is not very closely related to the true cardinals that belong to the family Cardinalidae. This species is endemic to Brazil. It can be found across a wide variety of dry to semi-humid open or semi-open habitats in north-eastern Brazil, and is especially associated with the Caatinga region. It has been introduced to Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, most likely through the escape of caged individuals, and is locally common in these areas even within urban settings.
